Crystal Animals
When industrialism had seriously established itself in Sweden. In the village Målerås, a new 'glasbruk', by the name of 'Målerås old glassworks' was founded in 1890 with a certain type of glass being it's specialty...
During the 1980s, 100 years give or take after founding, the glassworks was threatened by ”outside capital” , take-over (as well as closing-down was once mentioned.)
Some sensible people took up the question concerning the continuous destiny of Målerås Old Glassworks and decided to concentrate united efforts to reassure the future of the village. The engraving artist Mats Jonasson became one of the leading people within this process. Since 1981 he has been gathering capable people around him. This concentration has yielded results beyond expectation and inscribed the works in the Swedish glass history as one of the most successful.
Sweden to us Americans has an especially harsh climate. Therefore their work year is centered around hard work and national holiday breaks. There are two breaks in production where 'generally nationwide' factories shutdown and the workers take holidays and vacations to enjoy whilst they can. Shese breaks are what many Swedes no doubt look forward to Summer breaks. This can to American customers, cause delays under certain circumstances with orders in quantities that are made to ordr (typically 50+ items of a certain model may not be available at once, however 2009 we have greatly increased our available inventories!

Mats Jonasson began his artistic journey at Maleras, Sweden, in 1959 on leaving school at the age of fourteen. The local glass works needed an engraver and, since Mats was known to be exceptional at drawing, his father, who was employed there, was asked if his son could start. Mats Jonasson's talent as a designer attracted attention early on. After some ten years at Maleras Mats Jonasson moved to Kosta, returning to Maleras in 1975. Over the next few decades he worked with many well know local artists of his home country Sweden. This was the period he developed that natural, realist style of his which he has perfected in his huge collection, full lead crystal animal reliefs, which are used as awards, momentos and gifts everywhere. Inspired by the natural world around him, he has opened his mind to create his distinctive masterpieces. He has since developed the range of crystal animal motifs that has become famous and has spread all round the world. Even now his handmade works are still on the very cutting edge, unmistakable from any other glass. This son of the glassworks is represented all over the world, has been knighted, (no really) and his unique style is copied everywhere, but there is only one who occupies the top spot for level of quality and detail in glass art, and that master is Mats Jonasson. |

Using the 'master' sculpting, molds are created for the molten crystal and the finishing touches are hand made with diamond drills to the strictest standards. All crystal animals made in Sweden. Extremely high quality hand-etchings of the details of every animal made into the rear of the piece. We guarantee your satisfaction with 100% money back! Mats Jonasson's artwork is about quality of the medium and the most realistic details of the animals. Even the smallest crystal animals have the same amount of 'etching density' as the large items. Over and over our items are used in awards ceremonies and specialized (as well as generalized, such as Birthdays, Weddings, etc) when money takes a second place to quality. |
From the mold to the diamond drilled etchings. |
